Picket Fence Coat Rack

Filed in DIY, Thrifty Decor

So I had a few pickets left from my picket fence headboard project.  I had been drooling over Donna’s Horse Gate Coat Rack over at Funky Junk Interiors for months, and she inspired me to put one of the extra pickets to good use.

The previous coat rack was a honey colored faux-wood piece with brass hooks.

I removed the hooks and screws and hit them with some Rustoleum metallic gray spray paint (on the left)

A quick tip for spray painting screws.  Use cardboard as a drop cloth and poke your screws into it.  They will stick up nicely and you’ll be able to paint their tops without using much spray paint, which will prevent the paint pooling in the heads.

I had painted and sanded the extra picket when I made the headboard, so now all I had to do was cut it down to size and mount it in place.  The girls use this coat rack for their jackets and backpacks, so I had the littlest one reach up and marked that as the height for the picket.

After mounting the picket I spaced out the hooks and screwed them in.

Looks so much better, very pretty!

  14. Love the weathered beauty of it! Totally my style too. I giggle when I think that some of my friends, outside of blogland, would wonder why I would prefer a chippy old picket to the other, but they just wouldn’t ‘get it’. I really get it. I also used spray paint to redo some shiny brass double hooks and knobs in our masterbath. Huge savings! Great tip on the screws, I forgot about mine and had to touch the heads up with paint afterwards. I will try to remember your technique.

I love how it looks! How did you attatch it to the wall?

(Thanks for asking Heidi. I attached it with drywall screws with anchors. I was able to cover one of the screws with a hook, but the other one is visible right next to a hook. We’ll pretend we don’t see that one. :) That’s why it’s “Good enough DIY and Decor.”)
